An Authentic Medieval Mass & High Tea with Lady Devorguilla

Commemorate the auspicious life of oor Lady Devorguilla, one of the most powerful and influential figures from Galloway's history, with a special event on the anniversary of her death - the Feast of Saint Agnes.

Please join us for an authentic Mass in the restored Medieval Chapel at Buittle Castle, ancestral home of Lady Dervorguilla. Those attending will share this rare opportunity to experience what Mass would have been like in Galloway, during the era of Dervorguilla. Complete with gregorian chanting, and the Lady of Galloway herself, presiding over matters from the Royal Pew!

Afterwards you are invited to join Lady Dervorguilla, and her personal chaplain Abbot Aelred in the vaulted dining room of Buittle Castle for high tea, supplied by local producers.

Followed by a short tour of the castle grounds.

CONTEXT:

In 1290 Lady Dervorgilla passed away on the 'feast of Saint Agnes', which in modern times falls on the 21st of January- and this year that's a Sunday!

What better way to commemorate the life of Lady Dervorgilla than with a Medieval Mass at her ancestral home? In the thirteenth century, Galloway was a prosperous and independent Kingdom, presided over by Lady Dervorgilla. She was a strong, fiercly independent woman who effectively built the Dumfries we know and love today. She is famous for having established Sweetheart Abbey (so named as she kept the embalmed heart of her husband in a small chest in her skirts for many years, and was buried with it), and for the founding of Baliol College, Oxford. She was the matriarch of an incredibly powerful family, being the daughter of Alan of Galloway and the mother of a King of Scots- John Balliol.
