Dark Tales of Old Annan

  • Annan Museum, Annan (map)

Join your trusty guides Mostly Ghostly and delve into the town’s murky, mysterious past, as we meander through courtyard and close, kirkyard and wynd.

Despair at an ancient curse laid upon the Bruce clan, recoil at the legend of a plague bearing stranger, and shudder at the untimely death of a local minister... Woven between the histories, feel the chill as we reveal haunting happenings from this historically important Borders town...

*Annan was the seat of the Bruce family in Annandale prior to their move to Lochmaben and was strategically important, due to its position on a key ford crossing of the Solway Firth. It was on a direct route taken by Edward’s armies north of Carlisle. The town was destroyed a number of times both during and after the Wars of Independence. The Bruces were Lords of Annandale and would have occupied Annan Castle, a fortified motte and bailey. It was while they lived here that the family were cursed by a Bishop called Malachi. Guests will visit the atmospheric site, also alleged to be haunted by a Green Lady…
