MORE ON THIS TOUR:

Closeburn Castle: ancient seat of the Clan Kirkpatrick and a hidden treasure steeped in dramatic history. One of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in Scotland, Closeburn was home to Roger ‘Mak Siccar’ Kirkpatrick, who famously killed the Red Comyn, and has links with many fascinating characters

There is a darker, more curious side to the castle - once plagued by a chilling death omen, a lady in black has been witnessed along with the sense that someone is watching... Discover the grim end met by a Kirkpatrick servant, a colourful courtship with Napoleon III and some darkly intriguing tales from the castle’s surroundings...

*The lands of Closeburn were first held by the Kirkpatrick family in 1232, when they were received by Ivon Kirkpatrick. The Kirkpatricks were subjects of the Bruces. Stephen Kirkpatrick was the next head of the family and father to two sons, Roger and Duncan.

Roger was a key ally of Robert the Bruce, and accompanied him to Greyfriars Monastery on the day of the Red Comyn’s murder. His infamous words ‘I’ll mak siccar’ have become the stuff of legend. Guests are invited to immerse themselves in the history of this ancient pile, where the Spanish branch of the family still live today.
