One tradition suggests Robert the Bruce was born at Lochmaben. It was the seat of the Bruce family for about 150 years prior to the murder of John ‘Red’ Comyn and their original motte and bailey is now part of the golf course.

The crumbling stone ruins at Castle Loch are all that remains of a castle built by Edward I and may have been used by the Bruces at a later stage. Bruce sent two of his brothers from Lochmaben to Dalswinton to arrange the fateful meeting with John Comyn and on Thursday 10 th February, he and his supporters set out from Lochmaben to meet Comyn at Greyfriars Kirk. In the shadow of Edward’s stone fortress, Guests will discover more about the Bruce family and their enduring links with Lochmaben.
