The Dr Flora Murray Appreciation Society
We present for your appreciation, daughter of Dalton nr Dumfries, Suffragette, Medical Pioneer, Activist and (now) Queer Icon, Dr Flora Murray.
An unsung hero who was relatively unknown until she came crashing into our world during our work on StoryTrails. DJ then set about working to bring her memory to the fore and gain the recognition she deserved. Using a multitude of creative mechanisms to tell Flora’s story and raise awareness of this phenomenal woman, we set out in collaboration with the Ewart Library, Dumfries, and Dumfries Museum to Bring Flora Home,
We embarked on a truly wonder-full journey as we began to recover her memory, reveal her story and raise her profile locally. It has been nothing short of epic, endlessly inspiring, and astonishingly influential.
By revealing and showcasing her story we aim to promote inclusion, re:present the diversity of our region across time, redress the under represented / lesser known queer heritage of the region, all whilst ensuring the fabulous Flora receives the recognition and appreciation she so richly deserves in the area she was born, grew up and undertook part of her medical training.
Visit our Gloriously Happy Blog to follow our endeavours to Bring Flora Home as they unfold, and we bring her memory to life (alongside some other queer ancestors associated with D&G who’ve revealed themselves along the way), allowing her to take her rightful place, Pride of Place, in our local history, hearts and minds.

28th July 2023 marked the 100th Anniversary of Flora’s death. We couldn’t allow this to pass without marking it. We used this auspicious day as an opportunity to raise awareness of her incredible life and celebrate her remarkable achievements.
We organised and hosted a Centenary Memorial Service at Crichton Memorial Church on the day itself.

Flora was honoured again as part of Dumfries’ Annual Festival of Remembrance, organised by the local Armed Forces in November, at the Crichton Memorial Church, where DJ offered a Eulogy for Flora at the event.
One further Remembrance Service in her honour, was held in Flora’s own Parish Church, in Dalton - sadly one of the last events to be held there before it’s closure.

Increasing Visibility.
One of the aims of our work was to increase awareness of, and familiarity with Flora and her remarkable life. In addition to all the community engagement events and activities above we also used the press and media to help share her story. Here are links to a few of the online talks, articles, TV programmes + interviews we have undertaken to help get Flora more widely recognised and appreciated.
ENJOY!
